Abstract: Since the reform and opening up, China’s vegetable production has been developing rapidly and now is the second largest plant industry. Vegetable production plays a critical role in China’s agricultural economy. But it also faces some challenges, including price fluctuations, food safety concerns, increased cost of production, etc. This paper compared the mechanization status of China’s vegetable production and typical foreign vegetable productions and provided some suggestions for China’s vegetable production mechanization by leaning from the successful experiences of other countries. Results show that, China’s vegetable production mechanization is still in the primary stage. There is a big gap between China’s vegetable production mechanization and that of the developed countries such as the US and Japan. The comprehensive mechanization level for China’s vegetable production is very low and unbalanced, varied by different operation types, different regional conditions, and different varieties. This study also identified some important factors influencing the mechanization of vegetable production in China, including policy support, extension services, and technology innovation. Based on the successful experiences from the developed countries, to realize the mechanization and modernization of vegetable production in China, formulating some supporting policies, optimizing regional concentration of vegetable production, establishing the standardized technology system, and enhancing the extension services are necessary.
